Esther’s entry into athleticscame in a rather unusualway. Her talent was spottedas early as kindergarten: “Mynursery teacher suggested Itry athletics because no onecould catch me when we playedtag,” she recalls. She beganon the track, focusing onthe 800 and 1,500 metres.Track-to-roadswitch pays offHowever, in the middle distances,she wasn’t quite fastenough to see a path forwardnationally or internationally.In October 2022, she madeher half marathon debut inCologne, winning with littlecompetition in 75:53. Shereturned to the same race in2024, clocking 69:49. In justtwo years, she had improvedby over six minutes.Her breakthrough at the nationallevel came just over ayear ago. In Seville, she placedfifth and qualified for theEuropean Championships inRome with a time of 70:24.Strong showing at theEuropean ChampionshipsIn Italy, she impressed ather first major internationalcompetition, finishing 18thand third among the Germanwomen. She also won a silvermedal as part of the Germanteam. The psychology studentcarried her strong forminto the autumn with twowins in Hamburg (GermanChampionships) and Cologne,both in sub-70-minute times(69:51 and 69:49). In January,she lined up for anotherhalf marathon in Houston,Texas, but had to drop out– 82 –
