2021: Review

The GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON was the first really big running event in Germany after the long Corona break. More than 15,000 participants participated in the 21.0975 km race on August 22, 2021. Because everyone was either vaccinated against Covid19, recovered from the disease, or had proof of a negative PCR test, the run was also a safe event along a super-fast course that passed all the major landmarks—with the start and finish close to the Brandenburg Gate and the Victory Column. old. But my coach Renato Canova is particularly demanding of his athletes. This includes days like a Thursday in August, when there was still a good week to go until the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON. “Special Block” is what my coach calls it. Sounds kind of harmless, but it’s borderline, and if you can get through it, you know you’re ready for a really fast marathon. In a nutshell: In the morning, a relaxed two-kilometre warmup run, then ten kilometres in 32:48 minutes. A five-minute break, then 15 kilometres of increased speed, ending with a pace of 3:04. Lunch break. In the afternoon, first a two-kilometre shake-out run, after which nothing really felt relaxed, before another ten kilometres to be run in 32:29 minutes. And as if all that wasn’t enough, at the end there were ten 600m tempo runs in 1:37 to 1:39 minutes with two-minute breaks in between. Philipp Pflieger is one of the top marathon runners in Germany. At the 40th GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON 2021 he was the top German finisher in ninth place in 1:03:03 hours
