2021: Preview

#restartrunning: The GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON is the first really big running event in Germany after the long Corona break. More than 25,000 participants are expected to run the 21.0975 kilometres on August 22, 2021. Because all of them will either have been vaccinated against Covid19, have recovered from the disease or have demonstrated through PCR tests not to be currently infected, the run will also be a safe affair. You can expect a super-fast loop course that takes you past all the major sights - with the start and finish in the immediate vicinity of the Brandenburg Gate and the Victory Column. - 37 - The first „borderless“ Berlin Half Marathon was advertised on pillars in 1990. The first champions of the race through East and West Berlin were Birgit Stephan and Stephan Freigang

While the event was supported by the state and was well-received by the active participants, this situation was to change drastically with the fall of the Berlin Wall. In the 1989 edition of the list of results, there was no indication that the Berlin Wall would fall a few weeks later, and the registration card for 1990 was printed. The then chief organizer (from the beginning), Stefan Senkel, received support from the western part of the city after November 9, 1989. Horst Milde, then race director of the BERLIN-MARA- THON, was to become the supportive partner to save the day and make the event possible in 1990—though this time as a half marathon, as the BERLIN-MA- RATHON was also held in the fall.
