2021: Preview

#restartrunning: The GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON is the first really big running event in Germany after the long Corona break. More than 25,000 participants are expected to run the 21.0975 kilometres on August 22, 2021. Because all of them will either have been vaccinated against Covid19, have recovered from the disease or have demonstrated through PCR tests not to be currently infected, the run will also be a safe affair. You can expect a super-fast loop course that takes you past all the major sights - with the start and finish in the immediate vicinity of the Brandenburg Gate and the Victory Column. In this digital magazine, you'll find all the important information about the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON 2021, when the race celebrates its 40th birthday.

Michael Müller On your mark, get set, go! Runners are finally able to get back to the starting line for the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON. That’s great news for Berliners, since this beloved event had to be postponed last year due to the pandemic. And this year the BERLIN HALF MARATHON will be celebrating an anniversary, too: thousands of marathon lovers will be gathering on the race course for Message from the Governing Mayor of Berlin what is now the 40th time. Congratulations on reaching this milestone! The first BERLIN HALF MARATHON took place back when Berlin was still a divided city - in 1981 in East Berlin as the “Lichtenberg Marathon,” later known as East Berlin’s “Frie- - 3 -

denslauf” (Run for Peace). The SCC Half marathon premiered in West Berlin in 1984. In 1990, these two sporting competitions were merged into a joint half marathon - a happy event that we owe to Germany’s reunification. This Berlin sporting event has since become a major international happening, one that draws more than 30,000 athletes from all over the world and crowds of enthusiastic spectators who create a fantastic atmosphere for the race. Every year it transforms our sports capital into a runners’ festival and a gathering of amateur athletes and world-class competitors alike. And our exciting supporting program has lots to offer, too, even if you’re not competing. All of our visitors can benefit from its focus on lifestyle issues, sports, wellness, health, and nutrition. In other words, you can look forward to a well-rounded event, thanks to the organizers and the many volunteers. Their commitment deserves a medal, too. My sincere thanks go to SCC EVENTS GmbH and the many volunteers, who include, as usual, many young people. So, following a long, coronavirus-induced break, I would like to welcome the many marathon fans and competitors back to our city and to wish all of the athletes every success.
