Wenn man also noch einmal richtig trainieren will, ist man dort genau richtig.“ A lthough Michael Schmitt only started running in 2010, he has been touring quite a bit around the world since —including, Sydney and New York. He records everything on his run watch. “That’s a lot of fun. You upload the data to the computer. And then, in our case, the world map flashes on every corner.” For the 58-year-old father of four with strong Berlin roots and his wife Viola Fischer, the “we” and “us” aspect of it is the most important one. She was the one who got him into running nine years ago. “She has always run. I’m athletic, but I never managed to get up and get running. At some point she asked me to support her — of course I could not say no. I started with 1,000 metres. Now, we run twice a week, sometimes three times — usually one and a half hours, around 15 kilometres.“ Teilnehmer nach Nationen Participants by country Nation Country Anzahl Number Deutschland Germany 24198 Dänemark Denmark 4536 Niederlande Netherlands 946 Großbritannien Great Britain 939 Italien Italy 854 Polen Poland 598 Norwegen Norway 585 Spanien Spain 514 Schweden Sweden 492 Frankreich France 466 Schweiz Switzerland 307 USA USA 250 Israel Israel 227 Österreich Austria 221 Russland Russia 211 Irland Ireland 208 Finnland Finland 174 Brasilien Brazil 112 Türkei Turkey 104 Belgien Belgium 93 Laufende Weltenbummler: Michael Schmitt und Dr. Viola Fischer. Public races are also an integral part of the running program for the two. Michael is tackling the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON for the third time. He is looking forward to the race. “The atmosphere is awesome. People line the course — like at the marathon in September — and there are music bands, drummers everywhere, people cheering you on. It is a great feeling. And it is excellently organized.” This provides optimal conditions for him to stay under two hours for the first time this year. “That is my goal. My training times indicate that this is possible. Maybe I can even pull off 1:55.” Michael, who earns his living as a practice manager for dentists and also runs a health studio called Icebox Berlin, thinks there is something to be learned by running in a big crowd. Although it can be a bit of a frantic rush, “it also makes it fun, because you quickly get into conversation with other runners. The internationality of it is exciting, and you end up mostly talking in English.” Michael Schmitt recommends that half-marathon Berlin tourists use their non-running time “to just wander through the city, preferably through the In-districts Friedrichshain, Prenzlauer Berg and of course Mitte and Charlottenburg.“ The unique Berlin multi-cultural mix is something special. And if you still need a warm-up on the Saturday before the big race, a lap through the Tiergarten park is recommended, which is intersected by the Strasse des 17. Juni, where the start and finish of the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MA- RATHON are located. Volkspark Friedrichshain is really good too. “It is a bit hilly there. So, if you want to get in some good training, you’re in the right place.“ Familienduell : Anne aus Gießen Family duel : Anne from Gießen Anne Trommershäuser kann nicht ohne Sport. 27
