Passing the Technical University, via the roundabout at Ernst- Reuter-Platz, it is then four kilometres straight to the Charlottenburg Palace. Here, the route heads sharply to the left in the direction of the grand boulevard Kurfürstendamm, past the beats of the well-established samba band Alegria do Samba, which draws many spectators and fans to cheer on the runners at this hotspot. After roughly 15 km the participants cross the Potsdamer Platz. Today one of the busiest spots of the city, before the reunification of Germany part of the death strip onto Berlin‘s most popular shopping boulevard, the route leads for about three kilometres past the idyllic lake at Lietzensee. Following a short climb, the race heads “downhill” for a few hundred meters past Kantstrasse, setting the pace for the rest of the journey. On the Ku‘Damm (as the Kurfürstendamm is fondly known) the live music spots get more frequent, the course becomes lined with more and more spectators, and the atmosphere gets better and better. Passing the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, the course leads straight through Wittenbergplatz (with the famous department store KaDeWe) and on past Nollendorfplatz to Potsdamer Strasse. Shortly behind Potsdamer Platz, the old event center at Alexanderplatz approaches. With the infamous TV Tower looming nearby, the course then continues through Mitte, Berlin‘s most populous district, and past Checkpoint Charly and Gendarmenmarkt, the new course hotspot at the most beautiful square in Berlin featuring the Schauspielhaus concert hall, and the French and German Cathedrals. The course then heads back out for the final kilometres, heading like a dream down the magnificent boulevard Unter den Linden to the Brandenburg Gate, and passing through the symbol of Berlin’s former division just 150 metres before the finish line. You cannot imagine a more emotional final stretch. The course is flat and fast, so it‘s always good for an attempt for a new personal best. In addition, the course is very spectator friendly; many points can be easily reached by subway (U-bahn), city train (S-Bahn) or by bike. 11
