What an amazing GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON we experienced on April 7, 2019. Under the best spring weather conditions, 29,757 runners and inline skaters completed the 21.0975 kilometres to the new finish at the Brandenburg Gate, after enjoying a fantastic sightseeing tour of the capital. Although Sifan Hassan from the Netherlands missed the women's targeted world record, she delivered a new course record in a strong 65:45 minutes. And Richard Ringer led the tough field of German runners, completing his first half marathon in 62:10 minutes to finish seventh. The Victory Column as a good omen for all runners
Kilometre one. Heading straight to the Victory Column. Is that an omen? The 35,551 runners should definitely feel like victors today. A record number of registrations. I am in the middle of it, in Block C, and as I pass the Victory Column, the question automatically arises: Will it be a victory over me? Four kilometres is now more or less a straight path to the Charlottenburg Palace. Tourists are taking pictures. Not of us, of course, but of the Baroque city palace. Continue to the left in the direction of Bismarckstrasse. The organisers promised 40 bands along the 21 kilometres. There‘s the first one: the samba band Alegria do Samba drums its soul out and makes our legs fast. The route continues past the idyllic Lietzensee lake and park. The lake is crossed by a road above it, Neue Kantstrasse. Meanwhile, we have left a third of the distance behind us. After another kilometre, we finally head back to east, getting closer and closer to the huge party in Berlin.
